Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston
About the Project
After the toll Hurricane Harvey took on the Jewish Community Center in Houston, TX, Butler-Cohen was hired to furnish and install (2) automatic flood gates at the main entrances, one gate being 27’ and the smaller one measuring 5’. This process included installing new concrete wall sections, pouring foundation for gates, placing and leveling the system, paving demolition and new curb approach, and excavation for drain at each gate location. We protected existing flood lights below by removing them during the construction and reinstalling at completion. Modifications to the existing detention pond we made to meet City of Houston flood mitigation requirements. Finally the gates were put to the test which included building a temporary barrier and simulating a flood to demonstrate the passive automatic operation of the gate.
